A Change Is Gonna Come
Is this what Sam Cooke was singing about? I think so, don't you?
Although I still believe our government is lead mainly by greedy, corrupt bullies; although it seems that just about every politician out there is warming some wealthy corporation's pockets, while hiding a graveyard in his or her own closet; And although I am quite obviously disillusioned with our political system at the moment, there's just no denying the emotional power of this image.
Is President-Elect Obama the best candidate to turn this country around, does he have our best interest close to his heart and ever-present in his mind? I don't know and I can't see into his soul. I only know him as the image he projects, but looks can be deceiving and well - Americans have been deceived long enough. Time will reveal the truth behind the rhetoric and I hope Mr. Obama follows through and manifests the change he claims to be, in the here and now.
You see, the key word here is "hope". Like him or not, he represents hope for the future and his election to the office of President alone is a sign this country is beginning to separate itself from its ingrained history of evil deeds, ignorance, and intolerance. Lord knows we still have a long, long way to go, but this is the most obvious sign of progress and promise of hope we've ever seen. I only pray it continues to gather momentum and multiply and multiply, planting seeds in our nation's children and their children... If hope is contagious, let it spread. We could all use a little right now.
In the words of Mr. Sam Cooke, "It's been a long, a long time comin' but I know a change is gonna come. Oh, yes it will."
