August 23rd - Mount St. Helens
For those like me who are interested in mountains/volcanoes, I've compiled some facts from around the web. For those who aren't, well, perhaps this post just isn't for you. Sorry :)
~ Native Americans called it "Louwala-Clough" meaning "smoking mountain"
~ Mt. St. Helens erupted on Sunday May 18, 1980 at 8:32am (PST)
~ Height before eruption: 9,677 feet
~ Height after eruption: 8,364 feet
Photo courtesy of Yours Truly :)
~ Height of Mt. Rainier: 14,410 feet
~ St. Helens and Rainier are both in the Cascade Range, about 50 miles away from each other
~ The 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens lasted 9 hours and devastated more than 150 square miles of forest and recreation area
~ Volcanic ash was blown more than 15 miles into the air and was carried in great amounts as far as Montana and in smaller amounts around the world.
~ 57 people lost their lives in the blast
~ The mountain and 110,00 acres surrounding it are now a national monument

Enjoy the photos ...
It was a pretty uneventful day. In fact, this is the only wildlife I saw.
~ Zooming in on Mount St. Helens ~
That's about as close as I could get with my crappy lens.
Of course what kind of day would it be if I didn't get a couple of pics of Mt. Rainier!
As seen from a gas station on the way home :)
That's all for now. Another update coming soon!
